Notes on the Movie Viewing of A Matter of Justice
by Traciy Curry-Reyes
On the night that the movie aired for the first time, Christy and her grandmother Mary viewed the movie together in private. The movie A Matter of Justice was shown in two parts on NBC. The movie told the story of Mary Brown who sought justice for her son Marine Cpl. Chris Randall Brown. It traces his life from his time in the military to his death on September 2, 1982 in Hawaii, and the conviction of his wife Kathy Brown and her lover Rocky Jackson. At the time the movie aired, Chris Brown's daughter, baby Christy was a 13 year old student at Etowah Middle School. Mary Brown said the movie came to the attention of Hollywood when an attorney contacted her about making a movie. (though someone close to the case told me that Mary Brown actually pitched the idea and pushed for a movie to be made). Mary Brown was praised for her courage in seeing Dusty and Rocky prosecuted for Chris's death. She said that apart from his death, the whole ordeal of dealing with the Marine Corps was a nightmare. She wanted other moms to push forward with getting the help they need to find out about their loved ones' death despite the intimidation.
